When I visited Los Angeles in August, I took a few pics of some curbside gardens that were recently legalized. It’s hard to believe that this guerrilla gardening had been illegal, and that in the early 21st century planting food on unused strips of land is revolutionary, radical, direct action! I love gardens. Perhaps it’s the connection with my roots as well as the plants? My mother was an accomplished vegetable gardener who grew enough for our family and to barter with neighbors. In my early years, most of our food came from what was grown or raised on our small farm. But city life and supermarkets had become a way of life by the time I reached my teens. As a young adult, I decided to find my way “back to the garden” and good nutrition.
Today, food scarcity is spreading throughout America, and more of us are feeling the hunger pangs. It’s scary to see so many politicians determined to deprive our most needy citizens from receiving food stamps. Poor neighborhoods are described as food deserts because residents don’t have access to healthy food. We’ll have to learn how to grow our own food if we want to keep eating. So find out how to “dig-in” and “permablitz.” Plant a garden and change your life!
