An excellent example of the insanity of the “War on Drugs” is the refusal of the major Western consumer nations (Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, and the United States) to legalize and license Afghanistan’s poppy crop for medicinal purposes (morphine).
There is a shortage of opium for manufacturing medicine; yet, the US determinedly destroys this impoverished country’s one cash crop. What purpose does this serve?
Afghanistan is one of the most desolate and developmentally delayed countries on this Earth. Keeping their main source of income illegal has imprisoned their entire population in poverty. It forces the Afghan people to ally themselves with whichever warlord can protect their crops.
The West’s ignorance and arrogance about Afghanistan is appalling. With our war machines, we kill innocent people by bombing their their villages into rubble; we starve them by denying them a viable economic infrastructure.
The war on drugs is a war on humanity, including the blind, self-rightous perpetrators. And we are all losing.
